PORT ST. LUCIE – More details were released Oct. 20 in the case of more than 100 cats and kittens rescued from an alleged hoarding situation at a Port St. Lucie home.
A total of 124 cats and kittens – including some that were deceased – were taken from a home in the 2500 block of Southwest Warwick Avenue, Port St. Lucie by Port St. Lucie Animal Control on Oct. 13, according to a Port St. Lucie Police press release.
Animal Control personnel responded to concerns about the number of cats inside the home and the animals’ living conditions. During the response, personnel documented unsanitary conditions, including accumulated feces and deceased kittens, according to the press release.
All cats involved in the case were surrendered, allowing animal care personnel to focus on their medical needs and well-being. Two out of the three residents have been issued citations for hoarding and failure to provide medical attention to animals.
The criminal investigation remains active and ongoing. At this time, police said it cannot provide more details regarding potential future arrests or investigative steps, according to the press release.
The cats are being cared for between the Port St. Lucie Animal Control facility and the Humane Society of St. Lucie County.
“Many of the surviving cats are friendly and may become available for adoption once their medical needs have been addressed,” it was noted in the press release.
The Humane Society is in need of donations and volunteers to help care for the felines.
