Seminole County health officials have confirmed one case of locally acquired dengue in the Winter Springs area, prompting mosquito control crews to increase monitoring and reminding residents to use insect repellent and remove standing water.
Alan Harris, director of Seminole County Emergency Management, said the person does not live in the area but works there regularly and reported mosquito bites near their workplace.
The case comes as Central Florida counties respond to growing concerns about mosquito-borne illness. Brevard County reported its first locally acquired dengue case last week, while neighboring Orange County has reported five cases. In Apopka, small planes were seen spraying Tuesday night as part of Orange County’s mosquito control response.
