PORT ST. LUCIE – Port St. Police have made an arrest in the case of a hit-and-run that left a 63-year-old Port St. Lucie man critically injured on Oct. 9.

Eric Saint Aude, 60, was arrested on Oct. 22 and charged with leaving the scene of the crash with serious bodily injury and was booked into the St. Lucie County Jail, Chief Leo Niemczyk said during a press conference on Oct. 23.

“I want to recognize our detectives for the great work, fantastic diligence with so little to go on,” Niemczyk said. “An arrest cannot undo the harm or uncertainty imposed upon a victim, but (it is) the first step in accountability.”

The crash occurred at approximately 12:56 a.m. near the intersection of Northwest University Boulevard and Northwest California Boulevard.

The victim was found unconscious in the road suffering from severe head injuries and was transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where he remains in critical condition as of Oct. 23, police said.

Since the incident, detectives have conducted an extensive investigation, including reviewing surveillance video and pursuing additional evidence to identify the vehicle or vehicles involved and those responsible for leaving the scene, police said.

Police were able to track Saint Aude through a geofence warrant, which allows the department to get phone pings in a specific area, so police knows when the crash occurred, Niemczyk said.

There was damage to the gray Audi consistent with hitting a pedestrian on the hood of the vehicle, Niemczyk said.

Saint Aude was arrested at his Port St. Lucie home and “I don’t think he displayed a lot of emotion,” Niemcyzk said. “It’s difficult to understand how one human being could be, you know, without compassion for another.”

Police are still looking for the driver of a vehicle which was headed south and apparently also hit the man, Niemczyk said.

“We’re not able to establish a definite speed at this time,” Niemczyk said.

The 63-year-old man, known by police to be out walking or jogging at that time of night, was wearing an exercise watch, which enabled police to identify the victim. His name is not being released at this time.

Because of the nature of the injuries, the man has not been able to talk with officers about the accident.

Saint Aud was on his way to pick up newspapers that he delivers when the accident occurred, Niemcyzk said.

A passing motorist saw the man lying on the road and called 911, Niemczyk said.

“We’re confident that the person we’ve arrested was responsible for the majority of what happened,” Niemczyk said.
