Winter Springs boil water precaution advisory could last through Saturday, not linked to aging infrastructure

  • October 23, 2026

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. – About 10,000 people in Winter Springs remain under a precautionary boil water notice after a power surge caused a temporary loss of water pressure, city officials said.

The city said the notice could remain in place for another 24 hours while officials wait for multiple rounds of water testing to come back clear. Test results are expected Saturday.

Matt Reeser, communications director for Winter Springs, said the issue began when a power surge tripped breakers and briefly took systems offline before they were restored.

“That resulted in the loss of pressure,” Reeser said.

When water pressure drops, Reeser said, there is a potential for contaminants to enter the system. He stressed that the notice is preventive and does not mean the water is contaminated.

“It’s a precautionary measure,” he said. “It doesn’t mean there’s actual presence of any bacteria or any contaminants in the water.”

Winter Springs has dealt with water system concerns in recent years, including aging infrastructure. Earlier this year, the City Commission unanimously approved millions of dollars in funding to build a new east water treatment facility.

Reeser said this incident does not appear to be related to those broader infrastructure concerns.

“Historically, we have had some issues,” he said. “This does not appear to be in that category.”

He added that the interruption was tied to a loss of power, not a failure of the water infrastructure itself.

“This interruption here wasn’t a part of any infrastructure or system other than it lost power,” Reeser said.

The city said it has turned off water fountains at public parks and notified the school system to help limit the impact on students and staff.

At Winter Springs Town Center, some business owners said they learned about the boil water notice from customers asking what precautions they were taking. Employees at Boba Garden and Greek Eatery said they are boiling water before serving it to customers and have shut down their tap soda machine.

Water remained available on shelves at a nearby grocery stores, though many shoppers were seen taking cases home.

The city said it notified residents through web alerts and social media and will use those same channels, along with its Alert Winter Springs system, when the notice is lifted.

“We’ll wait for the second round of tests both clear of any contaminants or anything,” Reeser said. “We’ll lift that boil water notice, and we will let residents know through those means, social media, website and our Alert Winter Springs system.”

City officials said some customers may notice discolored water or extra sediment, but that does not necessarily mean the water is contaminated.
