Beach clean-up advocates can mix their next removal of debris and trash effort with Halloween.
SeaKeepers, Miami Waterkeeper and Resilient Sea are collaborating for SeaKeepers Trash and Treat Clean-up from 9 a.m.-Noon, on Sunday, Oct. 25, at Virginia Key Beach Park. The historic landmark is located at 4020 Virginia Beach Drive.
Volunteers are urged to wear their costumes during the clean-up event since Halloween is considered a wasteful holiday with frequently replaced, polyester costumes, single-use decorations and candy wrappers.
“Be part of the solution by removing trash from our coastlines and celebrating sustainably,” said SeaKeepers’ website.
Volunteers can participate in a Halloween costume contest, pumpkin carving and painting during the event.
To be a part of it, all volunteers are required to complete a mandatory liability and appearance release waiver.
Volunteers should bring hats and sunglasses, sturdy shoes, water in a reusable water bottle, sunscreen and bug spray.
For the clean-up, the organizations will provide buckets and bags, gloves, pickers and water refills.
Students who are volunteering can earn community service hours.
Participants will meet up at the Dance Pavilion and there’s free parking throughout the outdoor facility.
Since the clean-up is part of a broader effort to protect the environment, carpooling is recommended to save emissions.
