A driver charged with vehicular homicide for striking and killing a pedestrian in Apopka earlier this month has been sentenced, according to the Apopka Police Department.

Apopka PD said the department and Apopka Fire personnel responded to calls of a vehicle striking a pedestrian at East Main Street and Midland Avenue in the early morning on Oct. 8.

According to officials, the investigation determined that Jeremy Gonzalez, 20, was traveling on Main Street at 67 mph in a 35 mph zone.

The 20-year-old driver drove in the center turn lane in order to pass stopped traffic when his vehicle struck a pedestrian crossing the street, police said.

Apopka PD said the pedestrian did not survive her injuries and Gonzalez was arrested at the scene and charged.

Gonzalez pleaded guilty to the charge of vehicular homicide and on Oct. 14 was sentenced, closing the investigation, the department stated.

The severity of the sentence was not reported. The Sentinel has reached out to the department for more information.
