ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A viral video showing a driverless Waymo stopped on a one-lane road while leaving Universal Orlando is raising new questions about how the autonomous ride-hailing company handles roadside issues as it expands across Central Florida.
The video, which has been viewed more than 800,000 times, shows a Waymo vehicle stopped in the roadway as other drivers appear to be stuck behind it. Honking can be heard in the video.
At one point, a man walks up to the vehicle and appears to try to speak with someone inside. But Waymo vehicles operate without a human driver behind the wheel.
The video does not show what caused the vehicle to stop or how it eventually started moving again.
It is not the first time a Waymo vehicle has drawn attention on Central Florida roads.
Earlier this month, News 6 reported on another viral video involving a Waymo at Kirkman Road and Carrier Drive. That video appeared to show the vehicle getting stuck before crossing through an intersection and changing lanes while the traffic light was red.
The latest incident comes as Waymo announced Tuesday that it is expanding its service area in Orlando. The company said it added 53 square miles, bringing its total local service area to 120 square miles. The expanded area includes places such as the Orlando Science Center, Orlando City Hall and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.
News 6 emailed Waymo asking what caused the stop near Universal Orlando, how the vehicle got moving again and what passengers should do if their ride stops unexpectedly. News 6 also asked how quickly help can reach riders in those situations.
News 6 has also reached out to Waymo about the incident at Kirkman Road and Carrier Drive and asked what the company can do to ensure riders are safe.
Waymo has not yet responded. News 6 will provide an update when the company answers those questions.
