Florida (3-6) at No. 7 Ole Miss (9-1), Saturday, 7 p.m., ESPN
Latest line: Ole Miss is favored by 15 1/2 points

The Gators will stumble into Oxford in the wake of getting trounced by a hapless Kentucky team in a game where quarterback DJ Lagway was benched after throwing three first-half interceptions. By the second quarter on Saturday, Gator fans who make the trip will drown out the Rebel band with raucous chants of “Hire Lane!” “Hire Lane!” By the third quarter, Florida’s desperate athletic director Scott Stricklin will be spotted in the stands, frantically trying to air-drop a 10-year, $150-million contract onto the field right in front of where Lane Kiffin is standing on the Ole Miss sideline. In the end, the only thing meaningful memory Florida will take home from Mississippi is the hope that Kiffin notices their very public cry for help.

For things not to get out of hand, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin will have to take it easy on Florida, his potential landing spot for next season. Given what Kentucky’s pedestrian offense did during a 38-7 bloodbath, Rebels’ dual-threat QB Trinidad Chambliss and the nation’s most explosive passing attack should carve up the Gators. UF’s players, however, should be motivated while auditioning for the man who very well could be their head coach in 2026, but it won’t matter once the floodgates open.

After showing a pulse in a rivalry game against Georgia, Florida was lifeless on the road against Kentucky. This week, things get harder, as the Gators go to Oxford to face the coaching carousel’s most desired leader — and potential future Florida coach — Lane Kiffin. There’s a chance Kiffin could be wearing orange and blue this time next year, but he won’t take it easy on UF this weekend.

The Gators are 15 1/2-point underdogs for good reason in what is being dubbed the Lane Kiffin Bowl. Actually, it’s surprising No. 7 Ole Miss isn’t favored by more, considering the game is in Oxford and the Rebels are rolling. Florida has been in a free fall and is coming off an embarrasing 38-7 loss at Kentucky. Ole Miss is much better than Kentucky. The Gators, however, may have extra motivation as UF aims to poach Kiffin away from the Rebels. The spotlight certainly will be on Gators struggling QB DJ Lagway, whose 12 interceptions lead the SEC, as rumors swirl around his future.
