WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Keylijha Johnson said he and his siblings are still processing the sudden loss of their mother, Lisa Johnson. Tampa Police say Johnson was one of four people killed in Saturday’s deadly crash in Ybor City.
“She’s a good mom, a great person,” said Keylijha, 25. “If she’s around, she’s always gonna keep a smile on your face. If you’re having a bad day, she’s gonna make sure you’re smiling.”
That’s how Keylijha said he’ll remember his mom. He said Lisa Johnson was in Ybor City early Saturday after spending time at the Funny Bone Comedy Club. Tampa Police said she was one of more than a dozen people hit by a car driven by Silas Sampson, 22, on the sidewalk near Bradley’s on 7th.
“My mom just was a good person. So, this happening overall is devastating,” Keylijha said.
He told Spectrum News it’s tough enough for him and his 23-year-old brother to lose their mother unexpectedly, but he said their little sister is only 11 and is taking her death especially hard.
“I’m just trying to be strong for them because I’m the oldest. My mom was all we had, so this situation is affecting us really hard,” said Keylijha.
He said it’s hard to process the details of what led up to the crash. According to police, Sampson was fleeing from Florida Highway Patrol when he got to Ybor City. Troopers reportedly backed off because of heavy pedestrian traffic there, but TPD said Sampson kept speeding on East 7th Avenue before hitting a car, and then people outside Bradley’s.
“I want justice for my mom. I feel like she didn’t deserve this at all,” said Keylijha. “I just wanna tell him — bro, you should’ve stopped. I just wanna tell him — you should’ve just stopped the car. You should’ve pulled over. I just feel like it never should’ve had to get this far,” Keylijha said.
In addition to her children, family said Lisa Johnson also leaves behind a three-year-old granddaughter. Her loved ones have set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the cost of her funeral.
