City honors Native American Heritage month
LARGO — At its Nov. 4 meeting, the Largo City Commission proclaimed November as Native American Heritage Month, recognizing the enduring history, culture, and contributions of Native American, American Indian, First Nation, Native Alaskan, and Indigenous peoples across the nation.
The proclamation honored the diverse cultures that have shaped the community and reflects the city of Largo’s continued commitment to advancing community pride, a key focus area in Largo’s strategic plan, the city said in a press release.
Community Engagement Specialist Aileen Carey invited the community to get involved this month by checking out educational resources from native and indigenous authors at the Largo Public Library and visiting nearby sites of historical significance such as the Tocobaga Temple Mound at Philippe Park, Safety Harbor Museum and the Tocobaga Memorial Plaza at Pinellas County’s Tiki Gardens in Indian Shores.
