Miami musician, writer and storyteller Eric Garcia, who performs as Uncle Scotchy, will celebrate the release of his memoir Uncle Scotchy & The Time Thief with an official book launch and signing on Thursday, November 5, from 7–9 PM at Little River Distillery.

The book grew out of Garcia’s eighteen years as a family caregiver — eight years helping care for his mother after her younger-onset Alzheimer’s diagnosis, followed by another ten years caring for his father.

Those experiences first became The Blues Opera, Garcia’s one-man show combining original music, storytelling, grief, dark humor and blues mythology. The production ran for 71 performances in Miami before evolving into the memoir.

Told in twelve boxing-style “Rounds,” Uncle Scotchy & The Time Thief explores family, caregiving, memory, loss, Miami and the question of who a caregiver becomes when the caregiving finally ends. Alzheimer’s and the passage of time appear throughout the story as an unseen adversary Garcia calls “The Time Thief.”

Garcia fronts the Miami band JUke and was named Miami New Times’ Best Songwriter in 2023.

The November 5 launch will include a book signing, conversation about the story behind the memoir, and a free Easttop harmonica with book purchase while supplies last. Garcia is also scheduled to appear at the Miami Book Fair on Nov. 21.
