Parents are speaking out after their 16-year-old son was shot on Halloween night after a prank gone wrong.

The shooting happened at around 11 p.m. in the Shenandoah area of Davie. The teen went out with a group of friends and played a game of “ding-dong ditch” on neighbors.

“(They) did some doorbell ditching, but I guess they kicked the door and ran. But apparently, the owner came out and chased them down the street,” the teen’s stepdad said.

The parents did not want to be identified along with their son.

The homeowner fired two gunshots, striking the 16-year-old in the arm. He was rushed to the hospital.

Davie Police say the shooting remains under active investigation. So far, no arrests have been announced, and it’s unclear whether anyone will face criminal charges.

The teen’s mother says the lack of an arrest has left her terrified.

“They need to find this guy, and they know who they are,” she said. “They know. So why he’s not being arrested? I am afraid. I am terrified. I want to leave the house.”

The family has now hired an attorney, who tells NBC6 they were informed that Davie Police forwarded the case to the Broward State Attorney’s Office for review. That office will determine whether criminal charges are warranted.

“This was not defending his property. He should have called the police department to report. That’s what you do,” the stepdad said. “To come out with a gun and start shooting on Halloween night, with all kinds of kids all over the place, just to start opening fire, two rounds. How irresponsible is that?”

NBC6 reached out to the Broward State Attorney’s Office about this case, but were directed to contact Davie Police.
