Heart attack survivor and American Heart Association volunteer Gigi Campos joins host Fara Sax on The Community Voice alongside Dr. Marcos Mestre, American Heart Association Board Member, for a conversation about heart health, family history, cholesterol awareness, and the Miami Heart Walk.

Produced by Miami’s Community Newspapers, this episode brings a survivor’s personal experience together with a physician’s perspective on awareness, prevention, and community education.

Gigi Campos Shares Her Experience as a Heart Attack Survivor

For Gigi Campos, heart-health advocacy is deeply personal. Her experience surviving a heart attack and cardiac arrest changed her perspective and inspired her to help others understand the importance of knowing their risk factors.

During the conversation, Gigi discusses her family’s history of cardiovascular disease and her experience with familial hypercholesterolemia, an inherited condition associated with high cholesterol. Her story highlights the importance of taking symptoms seriously, asking questions, and advocating for yourself when something feels wrong.

As an American Heart Association volunteer, Gigi uses her experience to encourage conversations about cholesterol, family history, and the support that can help survivors navigate recovery.

A Conversation About Heart Health Across Generations

Dr. Marcos Mestre brings his perspective as a pediatrician and American Heart Association Board Member to the discussion. He and Fara explore why conversations about family health history can begin early and how awareness can help families better understand cardiovascular risk.

The episode also addresses the American Heart Association’s work in research, education, advocacy, and CPR awareness. Through its Nation of Lifesavers initiative, the organization encourages more people to learn skills that can help them respond during a cardiac emergency.

Supporting the 2026 Miami Heart Walk

The conversation also looks ahead to the 2026 Miami Heart Walk, taking place Saturday, November 7, at loanDepot park.

The event brings together survivors, families, healthcare professionals, volunteers, and local businesses to celebrate survivors, honor loved ones, and support the American Heart Association’s mission. Participants can get involved by registering, forming a team, donating, or supporting the organization’s community efforts.
