Port St. Lucie has elected Steven Giordano as its new mayor, defeating incumbent Shannon Martin by more than 2,500 votes.

The election result represents a more than 14-point swing in the margin since the August primary, when Martin finished ahead of Giordano.

Giordano said the campaign debate played a role in changing voters’ minds. He campaigned on government transparency, traffic, and managing the city’s rapid growth.

“I think they saw somebody dedicated, watched [the] debate, saw somebody here for [the] right reasons, not a politician, not here for money, for the people, and I’m proud to be the people’s mayor,” Giordano said.

When asked about how he plans to address the recent historic flooding across the city, Giordano said, “First [and] foremost, meeting with tops. Residents don’t deserve what they went through last week.”
