Rabbi Mark Goldman had a round-trip ticket to Israel over the summer, but his plans were canceled due to escalating tensions with Iran.

The Plantation spiritual leader still wanted to make the trip, though, so he started brainstorming. He thought about news coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict and felt few of the pieces told the stories of average Israelis.

Goldman started reaching out to Israeli friends, who connected him with acquaintances willing to talk about their experiences on Oct. 7, 2023, the day Hamas raided Israel, killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostage. An assortment of Israelis agreed to speak with him, ranging from generals to rabbis to parents of soldiers.

The result is a 35-minute film, “Voices After October 7,” consisting of 22 interviews conducted by the rabbi and senior cantor at Broward Central Synagogue.

Among the interviewed: A woman, Reut Karp, whose ex-husband was shot to death in front of their children. And a volunteer, Simcha Greiniman, who recounted how he collected victims’ bodies and body parts from burned houses and cars.

Goldman did not have previous filmmaking experience. He shot all the interviews on his cellphone.

“I set up my iPhone and started asking questions. They spilled their guts,” said Goldman, a native of London, England, who goes by @RabbiMarkG on Instagram.

Acknowledging his lack of filmmaking know-how, Goldman has been working with a video editor to make final touches. The documentary only has one showing planned, on Thursday, Oct. 23, at Broward Central Synagogue, but Goldman hopes a post-film audience discussion will offer him feedback on how to improve the work and potentially show it at other congregations.

He describes the Israelis he met as “a people shattered, yet unbroken.”

“My goal wasn’t to give answers, but to let the voices speak — and to let people sit with the complexity of what it means to be Jewish, Israeli and human after Oct. 7,” he said.
