A fatal crash occurred near Pine Island Road and Southwest 19th Avenue in Cape Coral when a driver lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a large utility pole.
Police responded to the crash early Friday morning, where they confirmed the driver was deceased on arrival and that it was a single-vehicle crash with only one occupant.
Law enforcement further said that the driver traveled off the roadway before colliding with the utility pole.
The Lee County Public Schools’ public information officer confirmed with WINK News that the driver was a teacher from Ida Baker High School.
In an internal email sent to families on Friday, Principal Jami Covert addressed the incident by saying, “We are deeply saddened by the death of one of our teachers who passed away last night in a car accident.”
Covert then mentioned that resources from the School District’s Crisis Response Team will be available for students in need of support.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
