OPD officials provide update on barricaded subject

ORLANDO, Fla. – An hours-long standoff at a shopping center in Orlando has ended, according to the Orlando Police chief. 

A suspect was found dead inside a building off of Edgewater Drive near Lee Road in Orlando, police said. It’s not clear if the individual was shot and killed by officers or if they shot himself.

Orlando Police Department Chief Eric Smith said the officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave during the ongoing investigation. 

FDLE will conduct an independent review of the incident followed by the State Attorney’s office, Smith said.

What we know:

The Orlando Police Department arrived to serve a search warrant related to drug and weapons charges at a tattoo business. There were multiple suspects connected to the search warrant, the department said. 

When police arrived, police said someone exited the rear of the building with an AK-47 and ran back inside after seeing SWAT officers. Police fired several shots.

When police went inside, they found one person dead. It’s unclear how that person died. It was not clear if the person died by police gunfire.

FOX 35 has learned that no officers were hurt.

FOX 35 cameras captured multiple Orlando police vehicles, police officers, and SWAT members surrounding the shopping center. Glass at a tattoo business appeared to have been shattered, according to SKYFOX video from the scene.

What we know:

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., the Orlando Police Department said it was working an active situation near Edgewater Drive and Lee Road. It said roads were closed and encouraged people to avoid the area. 

At 3:31 p.m., Orlando Police said it was working a barricade situation.

Orlando Police officers are on the scene of a shooting on Nov. 14 at Edgewater Drive and Lee Road. 

What we don’t know:

Police have not released any details on the suspect or whether that person was hurt or not.
