Two teens died in a two-car crash in Lake County on Saturday that left several others injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred when a 2008 Toyota Scion driven by a 16-year-old girl from Groveland was traveling southbound on State Road 33 approaching Groveland Farms Road at 6:05 p.m., according to an FHP crash report.
A 2021 Lincoln Aviator driven by a 75-year-old Lakeland man was traveling northbound on S.R. 33 approaching the intersection. The driver of the Scion attempted to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone and entered the northbound lanes, the report stated.
The driver of the Scion saw the approaching Aviator and swerved back into the southbound lane where she lost control, rotated and entered back into the northbound lane in the direct path of the Aviator.
The front of the Aviator struck the right side of the Scion causing the girl’s car to overturn.
The girl and her passenger, a 17-year-old boy from Clermont, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The diver of the Aviator and his passengers, a 66-year-old woman, 6-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy, all of Lakeland, were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The 6-year-old girl’s injuries were serious while the other passengers had minor injuries, the report stated.
The crash remains under investigation.
