FORT PIERCE — The Fort Pierce City Commission Monday approved fourth-quarter contributions to two Main Street economic development organizations that say they’re meeting their goals, but operating with 2025 deficits.
Michelle Calvacanti, new interim head of Main Street Fort Pierce (FPMS), and Pamela Carithers, Lincoln Park Main Street (LPMS) executive director, talked about a variety of community events they have sponsored, business prospects they’ve fielded and online views they’ve recorded in the last three months.
Each organization receives $50,000 of its annual income from the City of Fort Pierce. For FPMS the city’ s promotion stipend represents about one-third of its budget, while it’s about half of LPMS’s annual spending plan.
Calvacanti estimated her organization will end the year about $10,000 in the red, while Carithers predicted Lincoln Park will be short nearly $3,000.
According to Calvacanti, FPMS has sponsored at least 20 community promotion events this year, with Shop Small Business Saturday coming Nov. 29, and the annual Christmas parade slated for Dec. 7.
Carithers said LPMS is working on a comprehensive survey of nearly 1,400 parcels in the Lincoln Park neighborhood to identify historically significant sites that could qualify a for the state and national historic sites register.
Carithers said the loss of a permanent office space has “caused hardship” in LPMS’ ability to host workshops and business prospects. LPMS was renting space in the Means Court building. However, Incubate Neighborhood Center, that was charged with renovating the former school building, failed to secure a long-term occupancy permit and the building has been closed for the last two years.
Officials also praised outgoing Main Street Fort Pierce’s long-time executive director Doris Tillman who will retire Dec. 31 following 34 years at its helm.
Also at Monday’s commission meeting, a member of the public who was giving public comment, was escorted from the chambers by police after he became agitated at the podium. The meeting was momentarily recessed while the man was arrested on disorderly charges and taken into custody.
