Quick thoughts from South Florida Sun Sentinel staffers on the Dolphins’ victory over the Washington Commanders in overtime at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, Spain as Miami improved to 4-7 on the season:
Dave Hyde, Columnist
A bad Marcus Mariota throw and good Jack Jones interception means the next two weeks won’t be spent on debating what Mike McDaniel was thinking in not taking a field goal with just over a minute left in regulation for the win. Dolphins win. Season is 4-7. Viva, Madrid.
Chris Perkins, Dolphins Columnist
Cornerback Jack Jones came up huge with an interception in overtime Sunday, bailing out coach Mike McDaniel’s late-game decision to go for it on fourth down, a decision that didn’t work out after running back Ollie Gordon was stuffed on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line. The result was overtime in a game that should have been won in regulation. Nice job of resilience for the Dolphins. Nice run game, too, totaling169 yards rushing. And another nice job by linebacker Jordyn Brooks (20 tackles).

Dolphins were opportunistic late with the Jack Jones interception of Marcus Mariota and field goal to win it. It wasn’t quite the resounding victory last week was against the Buffalo Bills, but Miami now has its first winning streak of the season. Some momentum is brewing for the Dolphins coming back home going into the bye, with the Saints and Jets to come.

Mike McDaniel’s decision-making continues to border on the bizarre, but Jack Jones keeps making massive plays. The game should have been over in regulation, as the Washington offense was purely mediocre and a 16-13 deficit after a Dolphins gimme field goal with 100 seconds left would have been a challenge to match, much less beat with a touchdown. The Dolphins survived an awful Commanders team and are 4-7, and will be favored to win their next two games, too.

That was an ugly, ugly win. But those are better than pretty losses, and Miami definitely will be favored to get to 6-7 in a few weeks. De’Von Achane keeps roasting that right-side edge for huge yardage.
