TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – There’s a new leader of the Leon County Commission.
Commissioner Christian Caban will take over the chairmanship for the next year.
Unlike the City of Tallahassee, which elects its mayor, the chair of the county is chosen from among its members. Traditionally, they’ve rotated the chair each year, and that tradition continued today.
The chair carries a lot of informal powers, representing the county at events, controlling debates and declaring emergencies. Although the chair’s vote still counts the same as everyone else’s.

Caban took the oath of office alongside his wife and son. He succeeds former chair Commissioner Brian Welch, who remains on the commission.
Caban pledged to leave each meeting as friends, and thanked Commissioner David O’Keefe, who was unanimously elected his vice chair.
“My goal is not just to lead our commission, but my goal is to support it,” Caban said. “And I mean that sincerely. I want to support each of you in achieving real, tangible results in our districts, whether you’re a district commissioner or you’re one of our two at-large commissioners.”
Caban takes the chairmanship amid a dispute with the City of Tallahassee over the Fire Services Fee, though all seven county commissioners highlighted the friendships on their dais.
County Commissioner David O’Keefe was elected vice chair. Both votes were unanimous.
