The Jamaican American Student Association, in collaboration with other chapters across Florida universities, launched a GoFundMe campaign to provide aid to families impacted by Hurricane Melissa.
After Hurricane Melissa tore through the Caribbean as a Category 5 storm, leaving nations reeling from its devastating impact. The hurricane brought catastrophic flooding, widespread power outages, and the destruction of homes, businesses and communities across the islands.
“We were all deeply saddened by the destruction Melissa caused on the island, but we’re working diligently to get aid to the island as soon as possible,” said Chloe Myrick-Ellis, a fourth-year cardiopulmonary science student and cabinet member of FAMU JAMSA. “We started a GoFundMe in collaboration with other JAMSA chapters across Florida universities, and we’re hoping for the support of our peers to bring relief to Jamaica.”
Myrick-Ellis said the storm hit her family in St. Elizabeth Parish, on the western end of Jamaica.
“Their home was destroyed in the storm, but by the grace of God, everyone is safe,” she said. “It’s heartbreaking to see how much the island has changed physically, and with the death toll rising daily, it’s been difficult to stay positive.”
However, the JAMSA cabinet member remains positive. “Still, Jamaicans are strong and resilient. We will rebuild and recover.”
The FAMU JAMSA Royal Court also issued a statement expressing solidarity and calling for collective action.
“Out of many, one people — a national motto that symbolizes the unity, diversity and resilience of the Jamaican people,” the statement read. “We are committed to mobilizing relief efforts, collecting resources and providing meaningful support to those affected. Together, we can transform compassion into action and embody the unity that defines the Jamaican people as we rise stronger, together.”
The organization urges students, alumni and community members to contribute to the Hurricane Melissa Relief Fund, emphasizing that every donation counts.
The GoFundMe page reads: “Every mikkle mek a muckle — every dollar counts. Whether it is $1, $10 or $100, your contribution helps bring Jamaica one step closer to healing and recovery.”
Beyond campus efforts, international organizations such as the Global Empowerment Mission have also committed to aiding recovery in Jamaica and other affected nations.
GEM has pledged $10 million in aid, three cargo planes and 15 containers of supplies headed to Jamaica within 48 hours of the storm.
As recovery efforts continue, the Jamaican community in Tallahassee remains hopeful. “In difficult times, solidarity is our greatest strength,” JAMSA’s relief message reads. “Your support will bring hope to those in need. Donate now to make a difference.”
