No. 1 DeLand defeats No. 4 Boone, 65-17

Coverage by Chris Hays

It was exactly what Boone coach Andy Johnson said could not happen Friday night if his team was going to have a chance to knock off No. 1 ranked DeLand (12-0) in the Class 7A Region 1 semifinal Friday night.

Johnson said his team could not let DeLand get out in front early, but that’s exactly what happened, and the juggernaut Bulldogs kept churning out points.

“They were about what we thought,” Johnson said. “Really freaking good. I don’t know who is going to stop them. They might get in a shootout. But it’s gonna take a really good team to beat them.”

DeLand only needed five plays to lead 14-3. They threatened to invoke a running clock late in the first half, before Boone (10-2) finally woke up and responded with a 69-yard scoring drive to keep the margin inside the mercy rule. DeLand led 44-10 at halftime and continued to pull away from there.

Aaron Hardy gave Boone a spark to open the second half, scoring on a 66-yard run on the first play. But DeLand’s Marceles Carey answered on the next down with a 67-yard touchdown run, and as quickly as Boone had gained momentum it was gone.

DeLand coach Rick Darlington, who won three state titles at Apopka previously, has his team clicking.

“We’ve really been playing well lately. The only thing is, we haven’t turned the ball over since like September, and we had two tonight, but besides that it was a pretty good night,” said Darlington.

Carey was again the star of the show. He scored five touchdowns and ran the ball 8 times for 203 yards, a whopping 25 yards per carry. He has scored 9 TDs in two playoff games.

His running mate, sophomore Taihj Moore scored on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Gardner Nordman on the game’s third play and had  6 carries for 152 yards rushing, also a 25-yard average. That was all in the first half.

“They’re just great young men,” Darlington said. “We set a standard and we’ve worked to that standard, both in the weight room and the classroom and on the field. They care about each other, and we don’t really give them much choice.”

The offensive line has been impressive all season. DeLand rotates a six-man front of Erik Copeland, the only senior, and four juniors Victor Small, Tucker Wilson, Justin Burns, Taz Logan and sophomore Markeis Johnson.

“My teammates, and my blockers, the O-line, they get me the space that I need to run and do what I do,” Carey said.

Carey shared a little secret, which is becoming a superstition for him. He has not taped up his shoes like he usually does for the past two games, He’s gained 425 yards without the tape.

“No Spac (tape), that’s the superstition right now and I’m gonna keep it going,” Carey said.

The DeLand defense kept Hardy in check most of the way. He managed 137 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

Joe Johnson and Jordan Banks had sacks for the Bulldogs. Nordman, who also plays safety, had an interception, as did Londel Dumas.

Asked if this team can win the state title, Carey said, “With our great coaches and teammates, I feel like we’re gonna get there for sure.”

No. 7 Dr. Phillips defeats No. 2 Fort Pierce Central, 22-21

Down nine points with just under a minute left in the Class 7A Region 3 semifinal at second seed Fort Pierce Central, it looked bleak for No. 7 seed Dr. Phillips.

But, in the blink of an eye, after a long touchdown pass, two personal-foul penalties and a couple of first downs, the Panthers made a 22-yard field goal at the buzzer to pull off the victory.

“We’ve had some crazy finishes, but that is right up there,” said 21-year Panthers coach Rodney Wells. “We had several guys go down (with injuries), but we didn’t stay down. Some young guys came through and got us two defensive stops late to give us a chance.”

Dr. Phillips (9-3) will return to the east coast for the region final to face No. 1 seed Vero Beach, which cruised past Lake Nona 56-7.

Camren West threw a 45-yard TD pass to Zhytrez Ervin with just under a minute left to bring the Panthers to within two points. They tried an onside kick, but Fort Pierce (10-2) recovered.

Instead of trying to get a game-sealing first down, the Cobras kneeled three times, resulting in DP calling all three of its timeouts. That’s when the craziness started.

The Cobras hit the DP returner on the ensuing punt for a 15-yard penalty. The Panthers got two first downs, and lined up for a 37-yard field goal at the buzzer. It missed wide left, but Central ran into the kicker for another 15-yard penalty. With a second chance, Federico Montalvo hit a 22-yarder to win the game.
