A new production at Augusta B. Conradi Studio Theatre by White Mouse Theatre Productions, brings with it an original script and score.

“Annexed,” created by Danielle Wirsansky and Shannon Wolf, tells the story of two families navigating complex intrapersonal relationships amidst a war-torn environment. Set in 1950s East Berlin, the musical explores themes of freedom, trust, and choice, breaking down the barriers that shield us from reality.

Fearing persecution, the two families are forced to make an unimaginable sacrifice, hiding together in a cramped annex while attempting to continue their individual lives. We watch as they navigate their stagnant environment with uncertainty, resilience, and faith for a more hopeful tomorrow.

With some members of the household still under the impression that World War II is ongoing, “Annexed” sets the stage for a powerful examination of secrecy and the lengths people will go to in order to protect the ones they love.

The show opens with melodic vocals from Eduard, the family’s patriarch and eldest member, immediately commanding attention and setting the tone for Act I. Having not seen the outside world for over a decade, Eduard and his family survive on food rations delivered by their friends Maria and Johann.

A compelling aspect of this production is its ability to translate across generations through emotional relevance and human universality. Supported by the Campaign for Southern Equality’s Back to School Mini-Grant, “Annexed” uplifts queer representation within Holocaust history, a topic far too often left unexplored.

Wirsansky’s graduate studies in Modern European and Holocaust History help shape an empathetic and comprehensive portrayal of love and survival in the lives of these families.

Klara and Petra, played by Allyson Mowery and Ava Griner, respectively, embody the strength of hope during uncertain times. Petra dreams of seeing the ocean, while Klara’s passion for writing bolsters their shared longing for freedom, and above all, for a life together outside the annex. Their Act I duet, “When You’re Mine,” stands out as particularly moving and emotionally resonant.

Alongside the couple is Greta, played by Sarah DeVoe, who brings forward a tender portrayal of girlhood and optimism. Their trio amplifies the melodies of a waiting world and the desire to chase new opportunities, even as time passes and Eduard’s dwindling health becomes a stark reminder of the unseen hardships the families endure.

Act II offers further vocal showcases as the story deepens into the harsh realities of life under occupation. “Remembrance,” performed by Adelheid, played by Gabriella Rieder, and her daughter Petra, guides the audience through painful recollections of their late husband and father. Mirroring Eduard’s illness, the song reveals the emotional and psychological toll of loss and sacrifice on families living in silence.

As secrets unravel and the families finally learn the truth about the war’s end, new challenges arise. Accompanied by delicate instrumentation from violin, piano, and oboe, the score provides a rich emotional backdrop for their shifting reality.

The show closes in a powerful choral finale: “We are joined by the voices of all who came before. An unending chorus holding onto what we know.” When the characters step out of the annex with only the question of what comes next, they declare proudly, “We decide what happens now.”

Reclaiming their futures after years of endurance, “Annexed” navigates impossible circumstances with heartfelt music, layered themes, and deeply human storytelling, demonstrating how the memory of those who came before us lives on through our own.
