PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — A man was arrested Thursday after blocking an intersection, wielding a screwdriver, and swiping an officer with his car in an attempt to flee.

On Thursday, officers with the Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) say they pulled over a driver, later identified as 26-year-old Kenny Bonnet, on St. Lucie West Blvd. because his car was blocking an intersection at a red light, in accordance with the agency’s recent “Don’t Block the Box” crackdown.

After officers approached Bonnet, they explained the reason for the stop and instructed him to pull over, but he refused to comply, per police.

While officers spoke to Bonnet through the driver’s side window, they reportedly spotted a screwdriver gripped in his left hand near the driver’s side door.

“It’s on the News!” the officer said, explaining that the crackdown has been heavily reported. “But you can do this anyways, whether you watch it or not.”

Police say Bonnet ignored them and slowly started to drive around the line of stopped vehicles, and then drove around the officer and fled.

PSLPD says he didn’t get far. He was pulled over for a felony traffic stop, a short distance later, and booked on counts of failure to stop and aggravated battery on a police officer for swiping the officer with his car when he attempted to flee.
