As the coaching dominoes continue to fall into place, with Lane Kiffin to LSU, Alex Golesh to Auburn and Ryan Silverfield to Arkansas, this one became the obvious next one to fall into place.

Florida is working to finalize a deal to bring Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall to Gainesville, multiple reports have shared.

ESPN shares that Sumrall’s deal is for six years and worth $45 million for an average of $7.5 million per year.

One of their top targets from the start, the Gators are landing one of the hottest coaches in college football in Sumrall, who has done a remarkable job at both Troy and Tulane, carrying a 42-11 record at those stops.

Sumrall is more than familiar with the SEC, with stops at both Ole Miss and Kentucky coaching the linebackers (and he also played linebacker for the Wildcats), and brings an impressive head coaching record to Gainesville at just 43-years old.

Before leaving to become a first-time head coach at Troy, Sumrall was elevated to co-defensive coordinator in Lexington under Mark Stoops.

At Troy, Sumrall won double-digit games in both seasons, while also capturing back-to-back Sun Belt titles as well, finishing among the top 20 teams in college football after that first season.

After going 11-2, to push his record with the Trojans to 23-4 over two seasons, Sumrall was pursued for many openings, but was ultimately selective about his next move, before eventually deciding on returning to Tulane – a place he had spent a few seasons as a co-coordinator earlier in his career – where he replaced Willie Fritz after the coaching veteran left to take over at Houston.

In two seasons in New Orleans, taking over for a team that had just won the Cotton Bowl, Sumrall has continued to roll with the Green Wave.

They went 9-5 his first season, followed by a 10-2 finish this year in the tough American Conference.

In each of his four seasons as a head coach, Sumrall has led his team to the conference championship game.

Florida has gotten a close look at what playing a Sumrall-coached team is like, as the Gators took on Sumrall and Tulane in the Gasparilla Bowl in 2024.

The Gators fired Billy Napier back in October after a 3-4 start to his fourth season in Gainesville.

Sumrall is set to become the fifth head coach of the Gators since the departure of Urban Meyer following the 2010 season.
