Tampa police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a woman in the West River neighborhood Sunday night.

Officers responded about 10 p.m. to the 1500 block of West Chestnut Street for a call indicating that an argument between two women who knew each other led to a fight and the death of one of the women, according to a news release from the Tampa Police Department.

The officers found one of the women, who is in her mid-30s, with a deep cut on her arm. She was taken to a hospital for treatment and later released.

Officers learned that the other woman, who is in her early 30s, had been stabbed multiple times and was taken to a hospital in a private vehicle. She died from her injuries.

“Detectives are now working to confirm what led to the initial altercation and the exact timeline of actions that took place in this incident,” the release said.

Investigators are also working closely with the Hillsborough State Attorney’s Office to determine what, if any, charges may be filed in the case.

Police have not released either woman’s name.
