INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Indian River County is saying its final goodbye Tuesday to Sgt. Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, the longtime deputy killed in the line of duty earlier this month. A memorial service begins at 11 a.m. at Corporate Air Inc. on North Drive in Vero Beach, followed by a procession and burial at Crestlawn Cemetery. Sweeting-Mashkow was shot and killed while serving an eviction call 11 days ago.

She served 25 years with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and was posthumously promoted to sergeant.
Loved ones describe her as a devoted law enforcement officer, a mother, a wife, and a woman who poured her heart into helping others on and off duty.
“She was an amazing mother she put her whole heart and soul into her job,” said her cousin, Joan Bennett.
Sheriff Eric Flowers, who worked alongside Sweeting-Mashkow for his entire career, said the department is grieving the loss deeply. “Our team will feel this forever. Terri was an amazing deputy with a beautiful heart. I’m absolutely heartbroken,” said Sheriff Flowers.
Community Gathers to Pay Respects
On Monday, a steady line of deputies, friends, and community members attended a public viewing, many carrying memories of Sweeting-Mashkow’s kindness and service.
“She had a beautiful smile and would do anything for anyone,” said Sandy Fox, who hired her as a dispatcher early in her career. “She always wanted to help people.”
Others described the loss as devastating for the entire community. “Terrible grief for the family and for the whole community,” said Benjamin Paul Zelno, who attended the visitation.
Fundraising Efforts
Sweeting-Mashkow was also known for her love of animals, particularly dogs, especially her German Shepard rescue, Adele. It’s an affection that inspired local shelters and trainers to hold fundraisers in her honor.
HALO No-Kill Shelter in Sebastian and K-9 One Training in Vero Beach partnered to raise money for her family, with organizers saying 100% of proceeds will be donated.
That’s not the only fundraiser for her family. Bleeding blue is selling memorial coins as a symbol of gratitude and remembrance. 100% percent of those proceeds are also going towards the sergeant’s family.
Second Line-of-Duty Death in County History
Sweeting-Mashkow is only the second deputy in Indian River County history to be killed in the line of duty. The first was Deputy Richard Raczkoski, who was shot and killed in 1986 while responding to a suspicious person call. His killer remains on death row.
Funeral Details and Procession
Because of limited space and the anticipated attendance of first responders, organizers are asking the public to watch the funeral service via livestream. CBS12 News will be live streaming it on our website, Facebook and YouTube pages. The ceremony is expected to run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Sheriff Eric Flowers spoke at the service, noting Sgt. Sweeting-Mashkow’s impact on the sheriff’s office.
“Many in the audience today were trained by Terri, and I know all of them would openly profess they are better cops for having been trained by Terri,” said Sheriff Eric Flowers.
A law-enforcement procession will begin immediately after the service. The public will not be permitted to exit the area until Sweeting-Mashkow’s family and motorcade have cleared the route.
A separate celebration of life for David Long, the locksmith who also died in the same shooting, is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 4 at Calvary Chapel in Vero Beach. Visitation is set for 1 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. service on Thursday. His family is asking that donations be made to local humane societies in lieu of flowers.
