TAMPA, FLA — The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) has declared a Phase I Water Shortage as the region faces a significant 13-inch rainfall deficit, with continued dry conditions expected in the coming months.

The restrictions will remain in place through July 1 of next year.

The Phase I designation does not change the watering schedules currently in effect across the Tampa Bay area.

What You Need To Know

The Southwest Florida Water Management District has declared a Phase I water shortage in the Tampa Bay Region

Currently, SWFTMD says there is a 13 inch rainfall deficit in the region

The designation does not change the watering schedules currently in place

For more information on your local watering schedule, SWFMD says to contact your local government

However, it does impose limits on wasteful or unnecessary water use, including allowing a hose to run unattended or water lawns and landscaping more than twice per week.

Michelle Hopkins, Regulation Division Director for SWFWMD, urges homeowners to prepare for the drier months by checking their irrigation systems for leaks, damaged sprinkler heads, and malfunctioning timers.

“As we go through these winter months, your lawn doesn’t need as much water,” Hopkins explained. “You can think about whether you really need to water twice a week, or if once a week is enough. At some points, we even encourage residents to skip watering for an entire month.”

As part of the Phase I shortage, SWFWMD will now require all cities and counties within the district to submit monthly reports on enforcement actions related to watering restrictions.

The goal is to ensure that local governments are actively enforcing the rules they already have in place.

Watering days and times vary depending on your city or county.

SWFWMD recommends that residents check their local government’s website to confirm when and how much they’re allowed to water under current restrictions.

If you’re unsure about your area’s rules, your city or county website will have the most accurate and up-to-date information.
