Cape Coral, FL — December 4, 2025 — On Thursday, December 4, 2025, at approximately 2:20 a.m., a Cape Coral Police Officer conducting radar enforcement near 1851 NE Pine Island Road observed a silver 2012 Volkswagen Jetta traveling at 119 mph in a 55 mph zone. The officer activated emergency lights and sirens and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle turned northbound onto Del Prado Boulevard North, lost control, jumped a curb, and crashed into a traffic sign near the intersection. The vehicle came became stuck on top of the damaged sign, and the officer was able to detain the driver without losing visual contact.

The driver was identified as Javier Alvarez Alvarez (DOB: 05/16/1998) of Cape Coral. Alvarez admitted to being the driver of the vehicle and stated he lost control due to the vehicle’s manual transmission. Officers observed that Alvarez displayed signs of impairment, including watery eyes and the odor of alcohol. A concealed handgun, along with an alcohol-filled flask, was found on his person during a search incident to detention.

Based on officers’ observations and performance during Standardized Field Sobriety Evaluations, Alvarez exhibited multiple indicators of impairment. Following the crash and DUI investigation, officers placed Alvarez under arrest for Driving Under the Influence. He refused to submit to a breath test. When officers were attempting to put Alvarez in a patrol car for transport to the Lee County Jail, he resisted officers by bracing himself to prevent them from closing the patrol car door. He was restrained and transported without further incident.

A subsequent inventory of Alvarez’s vehicle revealed a cooler containing alcoholic beverages. Officers also located another individual’s Florida Driver’s License in Alvarez’s possession; this investigation is ongoing. Alvarez was charged with the following:
