The driver, identified as Javier Alvarez Alvarez, 27, lost control of the vehicle after turning onto Del Prado Boulevard North. The car crashed into a traffic sign and became stuck, allowing the officer to detain Alvarez.

Alvarez admitted to losing control of the vehicle due to its manual transmission. Officers noted signs of impairment, including watery eyes and the smell of alcohol. A concealed handgun and an alcohol-filled flask were found during a search.

Alvarez was arrested for driving under the influence after failing field sobriety tests. He refused a breath test and resisted being placed into the patrol car, but was eventually transported to Lee County Jail.

A search of the vehicle revealed a cooler with alcohol and another person’s Florida Driver’s License. The investigation into this discovery is ongoing.
