FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — A five month old baby was seriously injured after it got caught in the middle of a domestic dispute that turned physical.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office (SLCSO) says on Thursday, at about 10:56 a.m. they were notified by a detective from the Fort Pierce Police Department that a five month old infant was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Deputies say the medical evaluation revealed the baby was found to have a fractured skull, along with bruising to its arm and leg.

The investigation revealed that the baby became caught in the middle of a domestic dispute between the suspect, Georgeina Hayes, and the female victim.

Deputies say Hayes allegedly tried to strangle the victim during the dispute. The victim was able to break free, retrieve the baby and tried to run to a bathroom for protection.

As the victim tried to close the door Hayes began throwing punches, several of those punches landing on the baby resulting in its injuries.

Hayes was arrested and booked on felony counts of domestic battery by strangulation and aggravated child abuse, deputies say.

Hayes is currently being held at the St. Lucie County Jail.
