LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) — Breeze Airways held its inaugural flight to Orlando this afternoon, marking the first new airline to serve Lincoln since the failed Red Way experiment.
Passengers, Lincoln Chamber members and airport authority members gathered for the celebration. Mickey Mouse was there to celebrate and take pictures for the first flight to Orlando from Lincoln.
The airport has worked with Breeze before because Breeze was utilized by the Huskers to charter flights for their teams.
Officials believe they learned from the Red Way venture and could tell Breeze what worked and what didn’t about this market.
“That was something that we were able to give to Red Way as kind of a playbook of, like, look, we know Orlando did really well on Red Way. We know Vegas did really well. These are markets you should look at. And they agreed. So that was really nice,” said Rachel Barth, Director of Air Service Development & Strategic Marketing at Lincoln Airport.
A passenger who was on the flight said it was a great flight, one of the best he’s been on in a long time. He also said the staff was friendly and the plane was clean.
He is excited about the opportunities this brings because he has two young kids and he says having direct flights make a big difference.
“There’s nothing worse than getting a connecting flight with kids. So, especially worrying about, are the car seats going to make it on, what’s going to happen when we get there,” said Odie Johannesson, a Lincoln Resident and inaugural passenger. “So, having the direct flight just makes it so much easier.”
The airline will have flights to and from Orlando every Wednesday and Saturday. In the next few months they will also be flying direct to Las Vegas and then on to Orange County California on the same plane.
