Many communities are still under an extreme drought despite the recent rain across the Big Bend and South Georgia

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Much-needed rain fell across the Big Bend and South Georgia to begin December. Rain fell on seven of the first eight days in Tallahassee.

Tallahassee International Airport received 3.01 inches of rain during the stretch of rainy days. That is a significant difference from the previous three months combined.

Here are some other December totals for the Big Bend and South Georgia:

The much-needed rain did help the drought somewhat across the area. The rain helped reduce the drought in Tallahassee, Thomasville, Bainbridge, Cairo, Quincy and Monticello from exceptional drought, the highest category (category four drought), to severe extreme drought (category three drought).

Other communities like Perry, Crawfordville, Madison, Hamilton and Live Oak are improving from extreme to severe drought. Check out the comparison between last week (first) and this week’s (second) update below:

While the rain was beneficial across the area, we are still several inches behind the yearly normal.

In a typical calendar year, the average rainfall between January 1 and early December is 55.87 inches of rain. 44.97 inches of rain have fallen so far in 2025, which is nearly 11 inches below the 30-year average.

Between September 1 and November 30, known as meteorological fall, the capital city picked up 1.59 inches of rain, and 0.10 inches in November. The dry turkey month was the third driest in Tallahassee’s history, dating back to 1900.

Looking ahead, rain chances look low the next week or two as the weather pattern shifts to a more northerly storm track.
