Quinn Gray is on the verge of a major homecoming.
Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that Gray is set to become the head coach at his alma mater, tradition-rich HBCU institution Florida A&M University.
Rattlers leadership moved quickly this week once it dispatched James Colzie to get Gray into the mix for the program’s coaching vacancy.
Gray had been the top candidate in the search HBCU program Hampton University (Virginia), which flew Gray to its campus earlier this week and which several sources shared had offered Gray its top football job.
Instead, Gray — who guided Albany State to a sterling 12-2 mark in 2025 and posted three-consecutive winning campaigns at the helm of the NCAA Division II program — is set to return to his alma mater, where Gray starred as a quarterback in the early 2000s.
Gray also has been an assistant coach for then-head coach Fred McNair at Alcorn State earlier this decade and prior to that was a head coach at Lincoln High School in his native Florida.
“A former star quarterback for the Rattlers in the early 2000s who also logged NFL stints with the Houston Texas, Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs, Gray has 24 wins in three seasons as head coach at Albany State. Gray also guided Albany State to the 2025 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title amidst a 12-win season that included a perfect 8-0 mark in league.
Gray has emerged as a hot coaching candidate this cycle; sources on Monday told FootballScoop that Hampton University (Virginia) has Gray at the center of its search to replace Trent Boykin, who was fired by the school last month.”
FAMU officials made the move to dismiss Colzie after he posted a 12-12 mark in his two seasons at the helm. The former Florida State star was elevated into the role after the 2023 season, when Willie Simmons parlayed his tremendous success at FAU into first a position on Manny Diaz’s Duke Blue Devils staff and then taking over the Florida International (FIU) program after the 2024 campaign. Simmons HBCU National Championships with the Rattlers twice in his final five seasons at the helm.
Henry Burris had been named by the school as the interim head coach earlier this week once it separated from Colzie.
