The Expressway Authority has approved a $218 million project to add an extra lane to the 408 near I-4, aiming to improve traffic flow before NFL games at Camping World Stadium in 2027.Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, a member of the Expressway Authority board, said, “That whole area will be a great improvement for the driving experience.” The project will add an extra lane of traffic to eastbound 408, increasing the number of lanes to five from Orange Blossom Trail to the I-4 ramps. However, the work will stop short of the tight curve heading to eastbound I-4, where many drivers previously ran off the road into a retention pond before barriers were installed by F-DOT.The project will also include a new interchange with Tampa Avenue and improvements to access Camping World Stadium, which is particularly important for when the NFL comes to Orlando in two years. Project planners anticipate that local road work will be completed by July 2027, while work on the 408 will continue.”It’s all about collaboration and coordination, because there will be a lot of different work going on. Contractors working on the stadium, contractors working on the local roads,” said project planners. The construction is expected to start next month and likely won’t be completely finished until 2029. Additionally, the Expressway Authority voted to move forward with plans for a new toll road in Osceola County. The Southport Connector, a 15-mile-long expressway connecting Poinciana Parkway to the Turnpike, has been in the works for years. Part of the six-lane road would be elevated and run down the middle of Cypress Parkway. Board members approved a project development study but have not given final approval to start construction.
