TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Tallahassee police arrested a man in connection with a July shooting near the University Courtyard Apartments.
Derrick McMillian, 26, was arrested on Thursday and charged with second-degree murder, according to TPD.
On July 6, TPD were trying to disperse a large crowd on South Adams Street when a shooting occurred. Officers found one man dead from a gunshot wound near the entrance of the University Courtyard Apartments.

McMillian was seen shooting a gun at the time of the shooting and was taken into custody. He was later released due to limited evidence in the investigation at the time.
According to arrest papers, McMillian claimed he was walking through the parking lot when he heard two groups begin to argue and heard gunshots. He told police he ran and hid before being chased.
McMillian said he turned around to shoot back at the person who was chasing him, who he claimed had fired shots.
Arrest papers show surveillance video obtained by TPD shows the victim, identified as Mark Williams, and three other men walking together. The video shows them hearing gunshots before running and trying to hide. More shots are fired, and Williams falls to the ground, according to arrest records.

Following the investigation, police determined McMillian gave inaccurate information and that all the shell casings found at the scene matched his weapon.
Five addistional casings were found at the scene but “they are not in the direction of where McMillian stated his perceived threat was,” according to arrest papers.
McMillian was previously arrested in October for allegedly posting a threat to commit a mass shooting at a local restaurant.
He was out on bond at the time of his murder arrest.
