TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Leon County Sheriff’s Office Council on the Status of Men and Boys hosted an assembly at Griffin Middle School to combat gun violence.
The assembly was held to make students consider the serious consequences of gun violence and highlight support from the community. The speakers included local law enforcement, a prosecutor, Big Bend Crime Solvers and the Tallahassee Urban League.

Organizer Royle King spearheaded the event and said the choice of school was intentional, considering recent weapons incidents.
Two incidents were made public by LCSO in the past month. One involved a 13-year-old bringing a “black metal air soft pistol” to class and another involved a 6th-grade student bringing a BB gun.
One speaker asked the students, grades 6 through 8, if they knew anyone who died by gun violence and dozens of hands raised. The speaker responded that this is exactly why they wanted to do this.
According to King, they are already working with several of the students.
