IOSCO COUNTY Mich. (WJRT) – Divers recovered the body of a Florida man who fell in Lake Huron after his small boat capsized offshore from Iosco County.
The Iosco County Sheriff’s Office says the 36-year-old victim was riding a small boat from shore to a 40-foot cabin cruiser, which was about 6 miles offshore from the area of Dyer Road in Alabaster Township, around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday.Â
An occupant on the cabin cruiser saw the 36-year-old’s small boat overturn in the waves, the man fall into the water and then disappear. Police say the victim was not wearing a life jacket and none were found in the small boat.
The U.S. Coast Guard and emergency crews from Arenac County initially responded to the incident. They later determined that the accident likely took place offshore from Iosco County, so more emergency crews there responded.
The Tawas City Dive Team, Oscoda Township Underwater Rescue and Recovery Team and other law enforcement agencies continued searching for the victim until nightfall around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Michigan State Police Marine Services joined the search when it resumed Thursday morning. They used sonar to locate the man’s body in about 55 feet of water a half mile from where he was last seen.
Anyone with information about the incident should call the Iosco County Sheriff’s Office at 989-362-6164.
