There is a total of 352 cats and kittens at the Tampa shelter. Meanwhile, capacity is 56.
TAMPA, Fla. — Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center is asking for residents to adopt as the shelter grapples with a record high number of cats.
The facility is overflowing with the felines, with 352 total as of Thursday, which is 628% of the capacity — 56.Â
While staff are working with rescue groups and foster parents, they need people to come to the center on Falkenburg Road in Tampa to adopt a cat or kitten.
The Pet Resource Center is the county’s only open-admissions shelter, so it takes in stray animals regardless of age, breed or size. It’s often over capacity, but officials said it has never housed so many cats at one time.
A news release stated no single factor accounts for the high number, but there have been hoarding cases that contributed.Â
Most of the cats available would make ideal indoor pets, and the shelter also has a program to adopt cats that would make great outdoor pets.Â
The center is open for adoptions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and anyone interested can look at the adoptable pets online.Â
