Miami-Dade School Board member Mary Blanco, during the meeting of Nov. 19, proffered agenda item B-5 recognizing the Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation.
The Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation is dedicated to supporting and serving children and families across Miami-Dade County. It was founded 50 years ago by a group of civic minded individuals aiming to improve the lives of families, children, and community members through service work. The foundation’s mission is to support pathways to success for the youth of the community through scholarships, educational programs, athletics, as well as arts and culture.
The Future Leaders Through Education Scholarship Fund was created to help students in underserved communities attend a four-year college. The foundation pays for tuition and books to attain a bachelor’s degree from a State of Florida university or college.
Since the inception of the program in 1988, the foundation has awarded over $3 million to deserving students. In addition, they partner annually with Miami-Dade County to distribute school supplies to students in low-income areas. Over $250,000 in supplies are provided annually to more than 11,000 elementary school children.
The Kiwanis also support families in times of need through community outreach programs and projects. During the summer months, the foundation provides educational and recreational activities for underserved children in Miami-Dade. The free eight-week camp offers a safe-haven for more than 250 children who receive complimentary uniforms and food.
Additional programs include a Youth Basketball League where members of the Kiwanis Club volunteer as coaches to thousands of children. Finally, during the holiday season, The Kiwanis Club of Little Havana brings cheer to thousands of families during the holidays by working with numerous South Florida community organizations to distribute thousands of toys to families in need. Since 1975, the Kiwanis of Little Havana has distributed toys to more than 300,000 children, from infants to teenagers.
