St. Cloud police have identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting early Friday morning as Deshay Brian Turner, a 20-year-old from Orlando.Police say Turner was shot after leading officers on a foot chase and pulling a gun during a confrontation in a residential neighborhood near Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway.Turner’s mother spoke exclusively with WESH 2, confirming his identity and expressing heartbreak over her son’s death. She said she believes the shooting was preventable and hopes his story serves as a warning to others. “I can guarantee you I know for a fact that my son was not a violent person,” said Tamika McKnight, Turner’s mom. Officers were called just before 3 a.m. to a car dealership after a report of a suspicious person. When they arrived, police said Turner was inside a vehicle and behaving suspiciously.St. Cloud police Chief Douglas Goerke said investigators are still determining whether the vehicle belonged to Turner, but noted similarities to a previous case in Orlando.“We are determining whether that was his vehicle or not,” Goerke said. “It leads me to believe in his criminal history, he does have something very similar to this up in the Orlando area at a Porsche dealership, so it’s very possible he was doing this also.”Police said when officers approached Turner, he ran, jumped a fence and hid in a nearby yard. Officers later found him concealed in shrubbery and gave commands for him to surrender.Instead, police say Turner pulled out a gun.Two officers fired their weapons, striking Turner. He was pronounced dead at the scene.“This is a tragic event all around,” Goerke said. “An officer doesn’t go to work every day thinking they will have to take out their firearm and have to shoot somebody.” “I just want people to remember him and know this didn’t have to happen,” McKnight said.Police said the two officers involved were not injured. Both have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure, as the investigation continues.
ST. CLOUD, Fla. —
St. Cloud police have identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting early Friday morning as Deshay Brian Turner, a 20-year-old from Orlando.
Police say Turner was shot after leading officers on a foot chase and pulling a gun during a confrontation in a residential neighborhood near Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway.
Turner’s mother spoke exclusively with WESH 2, confirming his identity and expressing heartbreak over her son’s death.
When they arrived, police said Turner was inside a vehicle and behaving suspiciously.
St. Cloud police Chief Douglas Goerke said investigators are still determining whether the vehicle belonged to Turner, but noted similarities to a previous case in Orlando.
“We are determining whether that was his vehicle or not,” Goerke said. “It leads me to believe in his criminal history, he does have something very similar to this up in the Orlando area at a Porsche dealership, so it’s very possible he was doing this also.”
Police said when officers approached Turner, he ran, jumped a fence and hid in a nearby yard. Officers later found him concealed in shrubbery and gave commands for him to surrender.
Instead, police say Turner pulled out a gun.
Two officers fired their weapons, striking Turner. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is a tragic event all around,” Goerke said. “An officer doesn’t go to work every day thinking they will have to take out their firearm and have to shoot somebody.”
“I just want people to remember him and know this didn’t have to happen,” McKnight said.
Police said the two officers involved were not injured. Both have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure, as the investigation continues.
