Longtime in-state rivals renew acquaintances for the first time in more than 24 years on Tuesday night when the Troy Trojans (8-5) take on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (8-5) in the Salute to Veterans Bowl at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama.

Troy won the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference before losing to College Football Playoff-bound James Madison in the conference championship game on Dec. 5. Quarterback Goose Crowder, injured in the title game, is expected to play while running back Tae Meadows and defensive lineman DJ Jackson Jr. entered the transfer portal and offensive lineman Eli Russ, also hurt against James Madison, won’t play. Crowder threw for 1,314 yards and 11 touchdowns with five interceptions in seven games, with Jordan Lovett the top available rusher with 317 yards and two scores. Rara Thomas leads the receiving corps with 577 yards on 34 catches with five touchdowns, and DJ Epps has 44 receptions for 480 yards and five touchdowns. Donnie Smith leads the defense with 10 sacks, and Jaquez White has three interceptions and 11 pass breakups.
Jacksonville State shared the regular-season title in Conference USA, finishing 7-1 before losing to visiting Kennesaw State in the conference championship. Offensive tackle Reggie Jackson is the lone opt-out, entering the transfer portal. Quarterback Caden Creel comes into the bowl game with 1,341 yards and eight touchdown passes to go with 1,085 rushing yards and seven scores. Cam Cook leads the team with 1,659 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground, and Deondre Johnson is the big-play threat in the passing game with 24 catches, 623 yards, and six touchdowns. Caleb Nix tops the defense with four picks.
The Gamecocks lead the all-time series 33-28-2, but the Trojans have won the last seven matchups, including a 21-3 win at home in their most recent meeting on Nov. 17, 2001.
