FORT PIERCE – A woman was arrested on Oct. 16 on domestic battery and aggravated child abuse charges after St. Lucie County sheriff’s deputies determined that a 5-month-old infant was injured by her during a domestic altercation.
According to sheriff’s office reports, the infant was brought to a local hospital with a fractured skull and additional injuries, including bruising to the arm and leg.
Through an interview process and collection of evidence, it was determined that the injuries occurred during a domestic altercation involving the suspect, identified as Georgeina La Shae Hayes, 38, and an adult female victim, according to sheriff’s office reports.
During the dispute, which escalated to physical violence, Hayes reportedly attempted to strangle the adult victim, according to sheriff’s office reports. The victim was able to break free, retrieve the infant, and attempted to retreat to a bedroom to protect herself and the child.
As she tried to close the door, Hayes began throwing punches, several of which struck the five-month-old infant. The blows resulted in the injuries to the infant, according to sheriff’s office reports.
Hayes is in the St. Lucie County jail on a $55,000 bond.
