The St. Pete Youth Farm is hosting its 12th Annual First Night of Kwanzaa celebration on Friday, December 26, one of the holiday season’s most beloved annual experiences. This free and family-friendly event centers on the first principle of Kwanzaa Umoja, meaning unity, and it invites the community to come together in a shared space of culture and connection.

The evening will include drumming, free food, and activities that reflect the spirit of togetherness and celebration. African attire is encouraged, and free parking will be available at the Enoch Davis Center, making it easy for families and neighbors to attend and participate. The celebration takes place from 5-8 pm on Friday, December 26, at the St. Pete Youth Farm, 1664 12th Street South.

St. Pete Youth Farm is a community pillar

The event is hosted by St. Pete Youth Farm, a youth-led urban farm located in the Midtown community of South St. Pete. The farm emerged from community conversations following the closure of a neighborhood grocery store, which left residents without access to fresh food and healthy options.

In response, young people helped lead the creation of an urban farm on city-owned vacant lots, turning them into a place where the community can access locally grown produce and learn about food systems. The program also focuses on youth development, offering opportunities in leadership, entrepreneurship, and urban agriculture.

Since its pilot program began, the St. Pete Youth Farm has employed more than 100 youth and continues to serve as a model for community-driven solutions. Hosting cultural events like First Night of Kwanzaa reflects the farm’s role as not only a food resource but also a gathering space rooted in culture and care.

Why Kwanzaa matters

Kwanzaa is a cultural celebration observed from December 26 through January 1 that honors African heritage and values within the Black community. It centers on seven principles that emphasize unity and faith, offering a time for reflection and renewal.

The first night of Kwanzaa Umoja highlights the importance of coming together as families and neighbors. Events like this provide space for intergenerational connection and cultural expression while reinforcing the strength that comes from community.

The First Night of Kwanzaa at St. Pete Youth Farm is one of several Kwanzaa events taking place across St. Petersburg this season. More information about local celebrations can be found here.
