Jacksonville highway repairs extended into new year after sewage spill

  • December 19, 2025

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Part of a major Jacksonville highway will stay closed into the new year due to ongoing repairs that stemmed from a sewage spill.

NCDOT officials say that due to unforeseen utility conflicts, Highway 24 near Highway 17 will remain closed for repairs.

The road is now expected to reopen January 9th by 5 p.m., weather permitting.

The road was shut down last weekend after officials said hundreds of thousands of gallons of sewage spilled into Scales Creek on Saturday.

Officials say the spill stopped several days ago.

Crews reached the stormwater box last night and are currently digging to expose the broken pipes.

City officials say repairs are expected to be completed ahead of January 9th, but they’re facing challenges with supply delivery due to the holidays.

DOT officials say drivers can use one of these detours while crews work:

Hwy 24 West to Bell Fork Rd. to West Huff Dr., to Hwy 17 Bypass South, exit Hwy 24 Business/Lejeune Blvd.Hwy 24 West to Bell Fork Rd. to Hargett St. to Hwy 24 Business/Lejeune Blvd.

Officials say drivers can still use Hwy 24 West to Hwy 17 Bypass South.
