STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — A fire that started inside a trash can quickly spread to a church building on Friday, according to the Martin County Fire Rescue (MCFR).

MCFR says at around 8:24 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a trash can fire on the side of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, located on Southeast Railway.

Upon firefighters’ arrival, crews found a compost pile fire that reached the eaves and roofline area.

Responding firefighters checked the church and were able to confirm that the fire had spread inside the building; only residual smoke remained.
