The St. Pete Police Department said the vehicle was found submerged in the Bay near the intersection of 62nd Avenue Northeast and Bayou Grande Boulevard Northeast.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The St. Petersburg Police Department has launched an investigation after a man was found dead inside of a vehicle submerged in water Saturday morning.

At around 7:15 a.m., a 2012 white Ford 250 pickup truck was reportedly going eastbound on 62nd Avenue Northeast. Police said “for unknown reasons,” the driver, David Hawkins, 35, continued to where the roadway ends and drove through the guard rail and into a grassy area.

Then, police said Hawkins continued eastbound, striking trees before going into the water.

A caller had reported the vehicle in the water, saying that a pickup truck was upside down in the bay, “several feet from the shore,” near 62nd Avenue Northeast and Bayou Grande Boulevard Northeast.

Police said the truck has not been reported stolen.

An investigation is ongoing.
