While many Americans enjoy traveling abroad for their vacations, so much of the rest of the world comes to the United States for their sightseeing and celebrations. Some major American cities, though, enjoy much higher international tourism than others.

To locate the 50 American cities with the most international visitors from 2014 to 2024, GOBankingRates analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Most Visited by Overseas Travelers. GOBankingRates also gathered data from the U.S. Census and Hotels.com.

With that matrix of information, GOBankingRates was able to find the 50 American cities with the highest number of international visitors, along with the costs of staying in each city for 10 days (and what tourists love to do most when in America).

Key Findings

Miami has seen the biggest increase in tourism over five years: There has been a 2.7% leap in international visitors to Miami over the last half-decade, more than any other major American city.

Honolulu has had the largest tourism decline: In the span of five years, international tourism to Honolulu has dropped by 3.4% — that’s the biggest decrease in the nation.

Staying in San Francisco or Santa Barbara is costly: San Francisco is the most expensive city for international visitors to eat in — 10 days of meals in San Fran costs roughly $2,700. Meanwhile, hotel stays are most expensive in Santa Barbara, where a 10-day stay sets visitors back by approximately $2,177.

Meanwhile, hotels and dining are most affordable in San Antonio, Texas: A 10-day hotel stay in San Antonio costs just $527 on average, and meals in that same span of time cost just $1,482.

There are five activities international visitors do more than anything else: In 2024, 86% of international visitors shopped, 83% went sightseeing, 40% hit national parks and monuments, 32% visited art galleries and museums, and 31% checked out historical locations.

Methodology: For this study, GOBankingRates analyzed data from the Department of Commerce’s Most Visited by Overseas Travelers, Market Profile: Vacation to find the most popular places visited by oversears tourists on vacation from 2014, 2019, and 2024. The five-year and 10-year change in percent of overseas vacationers was calculated. Supplemental Data was also sourced from the U.S. Census ACS. The cities were identified and sorted to show the highest volume of overseas vacationers. To find the cost while vacationing, GOBankingRates used Numbeo’s cost-of-living data. Assuming two adults vacationing for 10 days and 10 nights in a hotel, with 20 inexpensive meals, 10 mid-range meals, 20 domestic beers, 20 sodas and 20 public transport tickets. GOBankingRates used the dates of April 30 to May 10 as the travel days. To find the average cost of a hotel, the cheapest three hotels were identified within 5 miles of the downtown area using Hotels.com. The total cost for meals, drinks, transportation and hotels was calculated for each location. All data is up to date as of Dec. 2, 2025.
