A 23-year-old man is facing charges after he was accused of killing a legally deaf person during a hit-and-run crash in Maitland, according to the arrest affidavit. The incident was reported at the intersection of U.S. Highway 17-92 and East Sybelia Avenue, at approximately 10:54 p.m. on Dec. 13. Maitland officers collected video surveillance from nearby businesses, which showed the victim exiting a 7-Eleven and crossing the street against a “Do Not Walk” signal before being struck by a white sedan. The vehicle, identified as a 1999 Acura Integra registered to Kenneth Charles Alvarado Lugo, the suspect’s father, was later found in Deltona with damage consistent with the collision. Detectives interrogated the suspect, 23-year-old Keven Jose Alvarado Caquias. Upon questioning, he admitted to driving the car and fleeing the scene. He told detectives he panicked after the collision. He agreed to cooperate with the investigation and provided a sworn written statement at the Maitland Police Department, where he reiterated his panic and shock during the incident. According to the arrest affidavit, he expressed regret and said that if faced with a similar situation again, he would do the right thing and call the police. Based on the investigation, authorities have probable cause to believe that Alvarado Caquias committed violations of Florida Statutes, including failing to stop at a crash involving death.
